Day 127: You Can Choose the Direction, Not the Timing

May 07, 20263 min read

The back of the lot is narrower than I thought.

One of the unexpected realities of how things may look different than you pictured by the time they’re a reality.

And then a neighbor gave her opinion of the best place to put the living area for me to have the best ocean view.

After she let me know she was going to blocking another part of my view.

I wouldn’t have considered the spot she has suggested as a living room area if she hadn’t come to tell me they were putting up a screen to block the sun (and my view).

One thing I’ve learned over time is that choosing a new direction in life doesn’t mean you get to control how the entire path unfolds.

You can make the decision.

You can feel clear about what you want.

You can know deep down that something in your life needs to change.

But after that, there is still a process that has to unfold in its own timing.

And I think this is the part that can be the hardest for us.

We want clarity immediately.

We want reassurance that we made the right decision.

We want to know exactly how everything is going to work out before we fully let go of where and who we’ve been.

But life rarely works that way.

There are phases where things feel uncertain, where you can feel movement happening internally, but the external pieces haven’t fully caught up yet.

That space can feel uncomfortable because we naturally want to grab hold of something solid.

Something predictable.

Something that gives us the illusion that we are fully in control.

But I’ve noticed that some of the biggest shifts in my life required me to loosen my grip a little and allow things to unfold one step at a time.

Not passively.

Not by giving up responsibility for my life.

But by understanding that there is a difference between being self-led and trying to force everything into place before its time.

There’s a kind of exhaustion that comes from trying to control every outcome.

Trying to manage every unknown.

Trying to make yourself feel safe by overthinking every next step.

And eventually you realize that no amount of control removes uncertainty completely.

At some point, you have to begin building trust with yourself inside the uncertainty.

Trusting that you can handle what unfolds.

Trusting that clarity often comes one step at a time.

Trusting that you do not need the entire path revealed in order to move forward.

This is part of what it means to move through a threshold in life.

You don’t fully know who you are becoming yet.

You only know that you can no longer stay where you are.

And little by little, you learn how to keep moving anyway.

Today’s Gentle Practice

Notice today where you may be trying to force clarity before it’s ready to arrive.

Maybe it’s a decision.

Maybe it’s a relationship.

Maybe it’s simply wanting to know exactly how things are going to unfold.

Take a breath and gently ask yourself:

“What if I allowed this to unfold one step at a time?”

Not giving up your power.

Not avoiding action.

Just loosening the grip enough to let life move with you, through you, instead of against you.

If this resonates, you can reply and share where you are learning to trust the process of your life a little more deeply. I read every message.

With you,
