Day 131: How Life Refines What We Truly Want

May 11, 20263 min read

Oh, ok, that’s not possible.

What can we do?

I’m hearing that more and more as plans I had and reality aren’t exactly lining up.

Especially when we’re doing something for the first time, it’s very possible things won’t go according to the best laid plans in our heads.

Pivoting is a word that is becoming a part of my daily life.

And the more often it happens, the more at ease with it I am.

It’s increasing my ability to go with the flow as well as further defining what I really want and what ends up being nice, but not really important.

It’s easy to see how much of life is shaped by contrast when you look for that evidence.

By living through what we do not want, what no longer fits, what hurts, disappoints us, limits us, or simply leaves us wanting something more, we refine our desires.

We may initially see those moments as interruptions to life, or signs that something has gone wrong.

That’s not the whole story.

Every experience changes us in some way, and every experience helps us become more clear about who we are, what matters to us, and what we truly desire for our lives.

Sometimes clarity comes through joy.

Sometimes it comes through loss.

Sometimes it comes through finally realizing you can no longer continue living in a way that doesn’t feel aligned with who you are becoming.

And as those realizations happen, something new begins forming inside us.

A new desire.

A new preference.

A new level of understanding about what we want to experience, create, receive, or become.

Life is constantly refining us that way.

Not because we failed before, but because expansion is part of being alive, and experiencing things we don’t want is a major way to get there.

I can look back now and see how many things I once thought were setbacks were actually helping me become more clear.

More honest with myself.

More aware of what truly mattered to me.

Even the difficult experiences shaped something important inside me.

They helped me recognize what I wanted more of, what I no longer wanted to tolerate, and what kind of life felt more true for me.

And what’s comforting to me now is realizing that this process never really stops.

Life keeps helping us refine.

Keep asking.

Keep expanding.

Keep becoming.

There are desires within us that we haven’t even fully discovered yet because every stage of life opens us to another level of awareness.

And maybe that’s part of the beauty of being here.

Not arriving at some final perfected version of ourselves, but continuing to evolve, expand, and become more aligned with what feels true for us as we move through life.

Today’s Gentle Practice

Notice something today that isn’t going exactly the way you wanted or expected.

Nothing major.

Just one small moment of contrast.

Take a breath and instead of immediately resisting it, fixing it, or feeling frustrated by it, gently ask yourself:

“What might this be helping me become more clear about?”

Maybe it’s showing you what matters more deeply to you.

Maybe it’s helping you refine a desire.

Maybe it’s revealing something you no longer want to carry forward.

Just notice what comes up.

Awareness is often where the shift begins.

If this resonates, you can reply and share something life has helped clarify for you lately. I read every message.

With you,
