Day 235: When Guidance Finds You

August 23, 20265 min read

At 4:00 this morning I was awakened by the quiet sound my dog Yuki makes when he has to go out.

It was as clear as if he was sleeping right next to my head like usual. But he wasn't.

Two mornings ago I tripped over his brother who I didn't know was sleeping where I was about to step when I stood up.

In the blink of an eye, he was yelping, and I was on the floor in my own pain. And the three of us were all looking at each other like, what just happened.

The dog was fine. I had broken two bones in my foot and was in a lot of pain.

Because I can't walk now, Yuki is staying with a friend, so it wasn't really him I heard.

I must have been dreaming.

Our minds play tricks on us like this all the time.

Sometimes it is just a dream, or memory, or the nervous system reaching for what is familiar.

And sometimes it is something more.

That's why we can't take what our internal dialogue tells us at face value unless we know if it's our ego mind speaking or our higher self.

That takes some practice and time to learn the difference, but once you do, you'll see there's a big difference.

I learned a long time ago that God meets us where we are and delivers information in the way we are most likely to receive it.

It may be a literal sign, a bumper sticker, a book, movie, TV show, a video, or an email. It could be something you hear a stranger say to someone else as you pass by.

But if you're paying attention, you realize that was a message for you.

A new client of my ex-husband I had just met less than 30 minutes before, while we were having dinner, told me I should really get a mammogram, even though I was only 43.

I don't remember how the topic even came up that my doctor had suggested it and I thought I was too young, even for a baseline.

Because it was so odd for someone like that to almost insist I do it, I took it as a sign and booked the appointment that led to a breast cancer diagnosis.

Two weeks later I had booked an ultrasound without telling anyone because I wanted to see if all the things I was doing had shrunk the tumor at all. It hadn't.

I was disappointed and for the first time, worried there was a possibility that what I was doing may not work.

I came home, turned on the TV, expecting to hear the program I had recorded daily for years, and it was mysteriously on another channel. Which really isn't even possible.

The voice I heard speaking as I walked into my closet said, "You're doing everything you need to do." And another very direct sentence I can't remember.

I walked back out of the closet to see who was talking to me. That whole thing was surreal.

Those are just two dramatic examples that happened within weeks of each other that are seared in my memory because of the cancer experience.

In my experience, most aren't that dramatic. Usually it feels like something lands differently than everything else. Like an inner knowing it was meant for me.

But they happen all the time.

It's not that people don't notice them, they just dismiss them immediately as not possibly being what they almost acknowledged they were.

But, the more we pay attention, the more we will receive them.

I frequently see patterns in my morning reading, especially in the books I reread each year.

This morning Wayne Dyer talked about all the physical and mental reasons it's good to meditate. Then he said they all pale compared to the fact that it's the way we make conscious contact with God.

Then Louise Hay's affirmation for today was "I'm free to think wonderful thoughts. I am in control of my own mind."

By believing we are in control of what we choose to think, and by using meditation, not only to quiet our mind and find peace, but to experience that Divine connection, we open ourselves to see things differently.

And seeing things differently is the only way we grow and change.

And the more open and allowing of this connection we are, the more our mind will provide us with the information we need.

The information we may look at now as just our minds playing tricks on us.

Sometimes it will look like a coincidence.

Sometimes it will be someone saying something that makes no sense for them to say, but perfect sense for you to hear.

And sometimes it may be something we could easily dismiss as our mind playing tricks on us.

But the more we practice listening, the more we learn to feel the difference.

Today's Gentle Practice

Think about one moment recently that caught your attention in an unusual way.

Ask yourself:

What if that was guidance trying to reach me in a way I could receive?

You don't have to turn everything into a sign.

Just notice what lands differently.

Let yourself be open to the possibility that guidance is already finding you.

With you,

Lynn
