Day 238: The Dream Your Soul Still Remembers

August 26, 20266 min read

One of the huge imbalances in life is the disparity between your daily existence, with its routines and habits, and the dream you have deep within yourself of some extraordinarily satisfying way of living.

Wayne Dyer said that.

That feeling of imbalance is often what we notice when we're frustrated, restless, or sitting in the in-between after life has cracked open.

Something in us knows there is a gap between the life we are living and the life that is still calling us.

When we get close to The Truth Threshold, the dream starts to feel more real. It may still be blurry, but we can feel that something inside us is trying to lead us toward a more honest life.

When we're in the in-between, sometimes the part of our mind that wants to keep us safe and the same, all of a sudden has us seeing the life we just came out of beginning to look like a fairy tale.

We long for all the good times we had and block out what doesn't fit that narrative. Even when it's a divorce, we still have a tendency to at least partially block the negative, because we so desperately want the rest of our life back.

We don't want to figure out a new life, start over again. That sounds like so much work.

And yet, when life cracks us open, there is a way forward that isn't starting over.

It's going home.

Home to yourself, the part you may have forgotten.

Home to the dream you have deep within yourself of some extraordinarily satisfying way of living.

It's just a matter of reconnecting with that dormant dream. The one we may have stuck back in a dark corner long ago because we didn't dare to dream it.

It just felt too big, too different than the life we had built based on who we believed we were at the time.

All the beliefs we had given to us that told us who we would be.

It usually takes something big to crack us open before we are in a place where we are willing to look at what we built, who we were, and sitting in the in-between, ask ourselves some better questions and discover what we really want to be, do, and have in our life.

Because we are in fact, starting with at least a partially clean slate and we get to choose the future.

I know this because I've lived it.

After the cancer, 27 years ago, I wiped the slate clean except for my marriage.

We sold almost all of our possessions when we left Mexico and drove back to the U.S. with our car and a small cargo trailer that was mostly my library, my music, and art pieces that had been with me for almost two decades already, and my husband's guitars.

I sold everything in my kitchen that I had carefully curated for almost a decade.

We drove to the empty house I had flown to Scottsdale to buy as a remodel project right before the diagnosis.

When people asked me what I do in the U.S., I said I would flip houses. That was the answer my logical brain had constructed.

But, when we arrived and my husband saw the house, he decided he didn't want to sell it.

So, I was left to fully furnish this house and look for a new career.

My husband got a job doing what he was doing before.

I waited for a sign.

I saw an ad in the paper for a meeting at a hotel about learning to build websites.

They were becoming a thing just then, so I bought the training and began building websites for small businesses. I joined a networking group and even built my own networking sub-group.

Things looked good on the outside, but I was miserable.

It was work, and I was making money, but it didn't feel like me. It was more like a job I owned.

So I went back to waiting for a sign.

It was a year and 3 months after we moved back to the U.S., and a few months after I had started the website business when the sign came, to my church, in the form of Mark Victor Hansen.

He said one sentence as an aside during his talk, and I knew.

Nobody else in my church even remembered him saying it. Just me. I was the only person from Arizona who signed up for this year-long mentoring program about becoming an entrepreneur.

How could I be so sure I wanted to do this thing I literally knew nothing about?

I don't know, but I felt it in my bones. Really, in my soul.

I went to the quarterly meetings at high-end hotels around the U.S. and Canada. I did all the classes.

And out of 500 people, I was one of a handful who ended that year with an actual product and business, and things escalated very quickly for me.

When the sign came I was watching for it.

I had been preparing myself and I was ready.

I had never thought of being an information entrepreneur, but before I knew it, I was an author, speaker and mentoring other women who saw what I had just done so quickly they asked me to teach them.

Before life cracked me open I would have said my life was almost perfect.

I wasn't loving my job anymore and was looking for a way out of those golden handcuffs. Other than that, life was good.

But the Universe had a different life path for me, and it was clear I wasn't going to get there unless something major changed.

I had been studying personal growth and spirituality for more than 20 years, having conversations in my head with the people who had mentored me through their books and tapes.

I never once considered I could be on a stage doing what they do.

So the Universe opened a door I didn't even know to ask for.

It gave me a way of expressing myself and helping other women through what I had learned and experienced.

Those moments where life cracks us open are rarely fun in the moment. Some are devastating.

But sometimes they place us directly in the in-between, where we finally have to look at the gap Wayne Dyer was talking about.

The gap between our daily existence, with its routines and habits, and the dream we have deep within ourselves of some extraordinarily satisfying way of living.

And maybe that dream is not as far away as we think.

Maybe it has been waiting under the life we built.

Waiting for us to remember.

Waiting for us to choose.

Today's Gentle Practice

Think about one area of your life where you feel a quiet imbalance.

Ask yourself:

What dream might be trying to come back to life underneath this restlessness?

You don't have to know the whole answer.

Just notice what still calls to you.

The desire.

The curiosity.

The life that feels more honest.

Sometimes the in-between is where the soul begins reminding us what we forgot to want.

With you,

Lynn
