Day 248: Stop Feeding What Drains You

September 05, 20263 min read

Yesterday we talked about protecting the work we love from the things that are draining the life out of it.

And that got me thinking about how often we let things drain us in other areas too.

A conversation.

A responsibility.

A problem that keeps circling.

A person who always needs something.

A thought we keep returning to even though it never takes us anywhere useful.

We don't always recognize these things as drains at first. They can look like obligations or being a good person.

We can call it staying informed, being responsible, helping, caring, or trying to figure something out.

But the body knows when something has gone from useful attention to energetic leakage.

You can feel it.

Your shoulders tighten and you feel your mood shift.

Then your mind starts rehearsing conversations that haven't happened.

You feel yourself getting pulled out of your own life and into someone else's energy, someone else's problem, someone else's chaos, or an old story that has already taken too much from you.

And if you're not paying attention, over time that can become normal.

You wake up and check the thing that drains you.

You think about the person who drains you.

You replay the situation that drains you.

Before you know it, you're giving your best morning energy to something that doesn't love you back, doesn't nourish you, and doesn't help you create the life you say you want.

That's the part we have to be willing to tell the truth about.

Because conscious creation isn't only about choosing what we want to call in.

It is also about noticing what we keep feeding with our attention.

We can say we want peace and spend the whole day mentally arguing with someone.

We can say we want freedom and keep checking on the thing that makes us feel trapped.

We can say we want a beautiful, soul-led life and then offer our energy to every interruption, every drama, every fear, every resentment, and every old identity that still wants a vote.

And then we wonder why we feel tired.

Of course we feel tired.

Our energy is scattered all over the place.

One piece is in the past that won't let us go. Another in a conversation we haven't had because we're afraid to. Or trying to predict the future.

Other pieces are trying to manage what someone else thinks, checking for danger, waiting for permission.

Now there's only a tiny piece left for the life we actually want to build. All the rest of our bandwidth has been filled with what we don't want.

This is why protecting our energy matters so much.

It's not selfish. It's being honest with yourself about what your life force is being used for.

The things you keep returning to in your mind are participating in the life you're building, whether you want them to or not.

What we rehearse, consume, and whose allow to live rent free in our heads matters.

So does what we keep checking, defending, explaining, and trying to fix.

And it matters when we finally say, "I'm not feeding this anymore."

That doesn't mean every draining thing disappears immediately.

Some have to be dealt with because responsibilities are real, humans are part of our lives, and there are problems that require action.

There is a difference between responding to what needs your attention and letting it take over your inner world.

There is a difference between caring and carrying.

That is where the shift begins.

Today's Gentle Practice

Think about one thing you keep giving energy to that leaves you feeling drained.

Ask yourself:

Am I handling this, or am I feeding it?

Be honest with yourself.

Notice where your attention keeps going.

Notice how your body feels when you think about it.

Then choose one small way to call your energy back today.

You don't have to fix everything.

Just stop giving your life force to something that isn't helping you become who you came here to be.

With you,

Lynn
