Day 252: The First Step Changes the Energy

September 09, 20265 min read

We talked about the dream not being the interruption we treat it as.

And there's a reason we do that.

The quiet whisper we keep pushing away because life is already full may actually be part of our guidance. It may be showing us where our current life and our reason for living are no longer in balance.

But then what?

That's where a lot of us get stuck.

Once we admit there is something we want, something that keeps calling to us, we immediately think we have to know what to do with it. We think we need the whole plan. How it will work, how long it will take, what it will cost, who will understand, who will be upset, and what might go wrong.

So many questions. So many judgements.

Before the dream has even had a chance to breathe, we bury it under the weight of all the unanswered questions.

That's usually where fear comes in, dressed up as being practical. It tells us we're being responsible. It says we're just thinking things through.

And maybe we are.

There's nothing wrong with being thoughtful. But there is a difference between thinking something through and using unanswered questions as a reason to stay exactly where we are.

I've done that. I think most of us have.

We feel the pull toward something new, and instead of taking one small step, we stand there trying to solve the entire future before we move.

But that is not how life works.

Life gives us the next step. Usually, that's all. Just one step. Are we willing to take it.

Sometimes it is so small we dismiss it. Make the phone call. Look something up. Write it down. Drive over there. Ask the question. Clear the space. Say the truth out loud. Sit quietly and listen.

Those steps can feel too small to matter, but they do matter because the first step changes the energy. It changes us from someone thinking about the dream into someone participating with it.

That is a very different vibration.

Before I bought the motorhome, I spent a long time letting the idea move around in my mind. Well, a long time for me.

I had looked at tiny homes for a few years. I had imagined different ways of living more simply and spending more time near the water.

But for a while, it was still mostly out there somewhere. A possibility. A nice idea. Something I could picture, but not something I was actively moving toward.

Then the energy shifted.

I started looking at what was actually available. I started imagining myself inside different types of RVs, not in some fantasy way, but in a real day-to-day way. Could I sleep there? Could the dogs be comfortable? Could I work there? Could I cook there? Would I feel expanded or cramped?

I wasn't making some giant leap all at once. I was taking the next step I could see.

And each small step gave me more information.

That's what we forget.

A step doesn't always have to be a commitment. Sometimes a step is simply a way of gathering truth.

We think the first step means we're locked in, but often the first step is how we find out if the desire is really ours. It helps us feel what is aligned and what is not. It gives our intuition something to respond to. It shows us where our excitement is real and where we may have been chasing someone else's version of a dream.

That's why movement matters.

Not frantic movement. Not forcing. Not pushing ourselves before we are ready. Just honest movement. The kind that says, I don't know the whole path yet, but I'm willing to participate with what is calling me.

That willingness opens something.

It tells the Universe we're not just wishing. We're available. We're listening. We're willing to be shown.

And then the next piece can appear.

Maybe it is a person, a conversation, a listing on Facebook Marketplace, an idea that drops in while you are brushing your teeth, or a closed door that saves you from something that was never meant for you.

We don't always know what the next piece will be. That's why we can't demand that the whole map be revealed before we begin.

If we wait for that, we may wait forever.

The map often appears because we're moving.

I think about how many times I have wanted certainty before action. I wanted the guarantee. I wanted the sign. I wanted to know I wouldn't lose anything, disappoint anyone, make a mistake, or end up somewhere harder than where I started.

But there is no version of a self-led life where we get perfect certainty first.

We get inner knowing. We get nudges. We get desire. We get contrast. We get the uncomfortable feeling that the life we are living no longer fits the person we are becoming.

And then we choose what we do with that information.

We can keep pushing it away, calling it impractical, and waiting for the fear to disappear. Or we can take one honest step and let that step teach us something.

That's how we start.

The first step may not look dramatic. It may not impress anyone. It may not solve the whole thing. But it changes the energy.

And sometimes that's exactly what is needed.

Because once the energy changes, we're no longer standing outside the life that is calling us.

We've turned toward it. And that may be enough for the next door to show itself.

Today's Gentle Practice

Think about one dream, desire, or quiet nudge that keeps returning.

Ask yourself:

What is one small step I can take that would help me participate with this instead of only thinking about it?

It doesn't have to be big.

It doesn't have to lock you into anything.

Let it be one honest movement, one way of gathering truth, and one way of telling yourself that what is calling you deserves your attention.

With you,

Lynn
